Teachers do the Learning Too

Continued Prof Learning monrning

All staff at Harris Boys’ Academy East Dulwich will take part in our first Continued Professional Learning morning on Friday 16 October.

The Academy will open for students at the later time of 9am as all our staff engage in research projects and internal training to improve teaching and learning at our Academy.

Our teaching staff are meeting as ‘Research Learning Teams’ to continue working on their research projects.  We have seven groups looking at a range of topics which will help the Academy improve our teaching and learning provision or develop our leadership and management capacity.

These groups are working to prove various professional hypothesis including:

  • Learning is more important than teaching
  • More Able students exist in every classroom
  • A middle leader must be an outstanding teacher
  • Good leadership has more impact than good management
  • Student-to-student coaching improves outcomes

Student coaches

The image above is from a research project where Year 10 Science students are coaching Year 7 students. The focus of the project is on improving outcomes for both groups of students. It is in its early days but we look forward to seeing the positive impact I has at our Academy.

‘My coach is so good. They have helped me catch up on really hard things in Science that I did not really understand in my lessons this week’. Year 7 student

Our teaching staff will work in these 'research learning teams' until January when they will present their findings to the rest of the staff in the first Big Research Teachmeet ever to be held at the Academy.

While our teachers attack these research projects, our support staff will undergo training sessions led by experts within the Academy. These will focus on a range of professional development areas as highlighted by feedback from our staff. This is because we value the continued professional learning opportunities of all our staff.

As we progress through the year I look forward to updating you all on the progress our staff are making as we continue to strive to be beyond outstanding in everything we do.
