HBAED in Select Group of 102 Schools for Student Progress

HBAED_Image_Gallery_04Harris Boys’ Academy East Dulwich is proud to be one of just 102 schools across England and Wales where students eligible for free school meals perform as well or better than other students.

In almost all 3,526 secondary schools children eligible for free school meals perform less well than other children. But at HBAED all students (both those eligible for free school meals and others) attained on average exactly the same fantastic Progress 8 score of +0.73.

"Identical and exceptional progress"

“Our scores show that all students, regardless of background, make identical and exceptional progress, which is precisely how it should be,” said Chris Everitt, Executive Principal. “This is an amazing achievement by everyone concerned – the boys, their teachers and families.”

Andy Ratcliffe, chief executive of Impetus-PEF, an education consultancy, pointed to “brilliant leadership” and a “constant focus on success” as the reason for the unusual achievements of schools such as HBAED.

Mr Everitt added: “At the heart of our success is an absolute belief in the ability of every student to shine – no matter what their background, ability or character. We will accept no excuses for being anything but the best we can be.”

Top 6%

HBAED is 38th on this list of just 102 schools where students eligible for free school meals out-perform other students. The average Progress 8 score of our boys who were eligible for free school meals (+0.73) was significantly better than the national average for students not eligible for them (+0.11).

Overall, our Progress 8 score of +0.73 puts us in the top 6% for progress nationally. This means Harris Boys’ students achieved, on average, over three quarters of a grade higher per entry than students with the same ability nationally.

Progress 8 measures the progress made by students in eight key subjects between the end of primary school and the end of secondary school.  The national average is always set at 0.
