World Book Day Celebrations 2018 - Meet the Winners

WBD IMG 1167School was closed on 1 March, officially World Book Day, due to the snowy weather, so we celebrated one week later.

Over 50 students took part in three competitions which tested the boys’ knowledge of books and allowed them (and members of staff) to share their favourite books with each other.

Book Bingo

Book Bingo involved the students finding 15 members of staff who were carrying their favourite book with them for the day and completing a grid with all the titles on. So many students passed this test that the prizes were decided by a tie-breaker where the students had to describe their own favourite book. First prize went to Lawshall in Year 10 for his in-depth comments on Cirque du Freak by Darren Shan which have already persuaded other students to borrow the book. Runners up were Bobby in Year 9 reviewing Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz and  Abdoul in Year 8 for his perceptive thoughts on the manga series One Piece by Eiichiro Oda.

WBD IMG 1165The students also faced a tricky task identifying six old library books, so well read that they had fallen apart and then been cut up into pieces and displayed in a clear bag. Finding names in the text and pieces of illustrations helped them make their guesses. Five students tied for the prizes scoring 5 out of 6: congratulations to Abdul in Year 7 and Anson, Akinwale, Dillon and Dawda in Year 8.

Grand Book Quiz

The day culminated in the Grand Book Quiz held at lunch time in the library. The students faced 25 questions ranging from comics, through nursery favourites to teen books and classics. With 20 correct answers, the Key Stage 4 winner was Arthur in Year 9 (pictured top). Runners up were the duos of Toby and Daquan, and Vinoth and Nabil. With 17 correct answers, the Key Stage 3 winner was Daniel of Year 8 (pictured left) and the runner up was Michael.

Students also received their World Book Day Tokens which they can exchange for free books and special edition discounts at bookshops and participating supermarkets until the end of March.
