Year 8 Football - Harris Merton 3 HBAED 0

FootballThe Year 8s travelled to Harris Merton on Wednesday for a warm up game before their National Cup game next week. 

This was the first competitive game that the Year 8 team have played on a full size pitch, as they have now stepped up from 9-a-side to 11-a-side. It was clear from the outset that it will take the team some time to get used to the new format.

Brilliance

The game started in a scrappy fashion and no one wanted to take control. It was a moment of brilliance from Merton’s diminutive number 7 that broke the deadlock. He received the ball on the edge of the area, before flicking it through a defender’s legs and coolly swerving the ball into the far corner. The HBAED team could only applaud what they had just witnessed.

A show of character and leadership was what the Year 8 team from Dulwich needed and it failed to turn up. Nasir in centre midfield tried his best to rally the troops, but too many of the typically big game players didn’t step up.

A lack of communication in defence saw Merton score two more goals before the final whistle. The score was somewhat flattering for Merton, as HBAED did have some good chances.

Unlucky

Special mentions must go to Ramari who came to life in the second half, he caused Merton’s left back all sorts of problems and was unlucky not to get his name on the score sheet. Rajay was playing in his first game for the school and showed great potential in defence. Frederick also put in a solid shift in defence and will only improve the more chances he gets at this level.

The players in this team are undoubtedly talented but need to start playing as a collective if they are to win any silverware this year.

The team will be hoping for a change in their fortune when they travel to east London on Wednesday for the first round of the national cup.
