Behind-the-Scenes Careers Tour of South London Gallery

Year 9 were taken on a behind-the-scenes tour of South London Gallery recently, where they introduced to different members of the gallery staff, who explained their roles and responsibilities

The gallery is publicly funded and is a free space for the community to use. Students were encouraged to revisit to see any of the current or future exhibitions.

As well as key roles such as coordination and logistics, which focus on working with school groups, the public in general and the artists themselves, students were  introduced to the communication and advertising roles at the gallery.

The students were keen to learn about how various members of staff work with the artists whose work is exhibited at the gallery. This included challenges and problem-solving with installation and working with other galleries regarding collections and facility-sharing.

Students were also enthusiastic to learn about the various social media avenues the gallery uses, and how students could use these for different purposes in promoting their own art work.

Art Assassins

The students also learned about the various after-school and extracurricular activities that the gallery runs, including the Tuesday evening “Art Assassins”, which runs from 5pm - 7pm for students aged 14 - 20 years old. Students were keen to join this group and others can too. Simply visit the gallery at any time, including the Tuesday session, and sign up.

There is also an open call to all students from Harris Boys to enter their work in for an exhibition entitled “What’s not being said”. The purpose of the exhibition is to talk about life in Peckham.

If you would like to know more about the exhibition then you can see Ms Osborne for details and help with your application. The South London Gallery has made a special exception for Harris Boys that all boys and young people from age 13 – 25 years old can enter their work, so this is an amazing opportunity for the whole academy to get involved, as well as any recent leavers.
