Dear Parents/Carers and Students
Now that the weather is getting colder please can I ask you to ensure that everything has been labelled clearly with your son's/ward's name. Also to remind you that any items of lost property that are unidentifiable and unclaimed at the end of term will be donated to a local charity shop over the holiday period. Lost Property can be collected daily from Room G.17 from 15:20 to 15:30 by students. Parents/Carers can collect by making an appointment.

Please can we remind parents/carers once again not to park or stop illegally in the streets surrounding the Academy. This is causing disruptions and delays to local residents and is potentially hazardous. Please encourage your son/ward to either use public transport or the greener option of cycling to the Academy where there are plenty of secure cycle racks for storage.
We have had a number of complaints from local residents about unreasonable stopping and parking in the vicinity of the Academy.

We have a wide and varied range of clubs and activities of offer for the boys this year. Not all those offered are "after-school" clubs. Some are before school or during the lunchtime. Full details can be found on the attached timetable.
Please impress upon your son/ward that he must have your prior permission if he intends to stay after hours for an organised activity. We wish to avoid the boys queueing up at the Student Reception after shcool to phone home to get permission to stay. The use of the phone is for EMERGENCIES ONLY. Can we also remind you that there is no entry onto the Academy premises for student before 7:30 unless it is with the express permission of a member of staff. If that is the case he must wait at the main gate to be collected by that member of staff.

Yesterday, with a massive helping hand from PC Marcus, 10 year 8 boys represented the Academy in a Handball tournament @ Newham Leisure Centre.
The team did extremely well and were undefeated in the league format winning 5 games and drawing 1. This helped them secure top spot and booked them a place in the final against arch enemies Carshalton Boys School.
Unfortunately the boys lost in the final 3 – 2 to a strong yr9 side, and were unlucky not to win the tournament off the back of their league positioning.
The boys can and should be very proud of their achievements and lots of very positive comments were made about their ability, appearance and behaviour.

We encourage Parents/Carers to communicate with Teachers via the Student Planner but did you know you can also use email? Staff email addresses are listed on this website in the INFORMATION zone. We would encourage Parents/Carers to use this whenever possible as you will then have a record of your message being sent. Any telephone messages left with the Receptionist will also be emailed to the appropriate teacher for response.

Full details of your son's personal Log-In ID will be given to him this week together with instructions on how to use ParentPay.

EMERGENCY TELEPHONE CALLS HOME
January 27 2011
Can we remind parents/carers that whilst we are happy for students to call home in an emergency we also encourage the boys to make travel arrangements with parents/carers before they leave for school in the morning. If your son is staying after school for a club or activity he should only be doing so with your permission. If he has been kept for a detention in excess of 20 minutes’ duration this will only be if you have been given prior notice, either by a note in his planner and/or a telephone call home. This still leaves plenty of time to make the necessary travel arrangements.

Ofsted Monitoring Visit 1 & 2 Dec 2010
As a new Academy we have a “Monitoring Visit” in our first full year of opening and this happened at the beginning of December 2010. We welcomed 2 Inspectors into the Academy. Their focus was to assess how we are doing as a new Academy. Their conclusions, as can be read in the letter on the website, were:
• “The Academy’s capacity to improve further is OUTSTANDING”
• “The Academy has made GOOD PROGRESS towards raising standards”
• “It is right to pay tribute to leaders and managers for reaching quickly a point in the new Academy’s development at which students are enjoying their learning and making good progress in a calm, secure and new environment”
We are all very pleased with the very positive endorsement of our work so far and we look confidently towards the future

Traffic & Parking
Can I please ask all Parents / Carers NOT to park their vehicles in Friern Road or in other nearby roads while dropping students off? I have had quite a number of justifiable complaints from local residents unable to park their cars or gain access to their property. Your co-operation in this matter is gratefully appreciated

Dear Parents / Carers
As the term progresses we are accumulating a large number of items in "Lost Property". We are unable to return these if they do not have the student's name inside. Please will you check that you have put your son's/ward's name in his uniform and bag(s)- particularly his coat and Harris hat (if he has one)
Can we also remind you that there is a "Valuables Box" available for every PE/Dance lesson so you should encourage your son/ward to make use of it whenever he changes out of uniform.

Enrichment starts this week (20th September 2010)
Year 7 students will finish school at 16.20 every TUESDAY.
Year 8 students will finish school at 16.20 every THURSDAY.
Your son will have been told which Enrichment Activity he will be doing for terms 1a, 1b and 2a. The activities will change for terms 2b, 3a and 3c to ensure that all boys do three terms of Sport Enrichment and 3 terms of a new and exciting subject that they would not normally do this year.
