Year 7 - Harris Cup Final - HBAED 4 Chobham 1

Year 7 cup final 26.4.17

Casting the memory back to mid-December and the first round of the Harris cup, other than an affection for goals, there are few convincing comparisons that can be made between the team that put four past Harris Merton on that day, and the one that played in this final.

Five months on and they stood ready to strive for their most celebrated victory yet. An almost identical starting nine burst in to their first cup final with a heightened sense of belief and desire to add silverware to the somewhat understated trophy cabinet this sits outside of the PE office.

Early pressure

Following Chobham’s kick off, we piled on some early pressure that culminated in a wonderful passage of five passes, played wide by Joshuah in to the feet of Brian who linked with Bilal to set up Steve five yards from goal, only to be denied by an incredible save. Shortly after, Chobham played a speculative ball down the throat of our defence and were rewarded for gambling on the subsequent loose ball, with a tidy finish leaving us 1-0 down.

In situations such as this, pulling together as a team requires true strength of character,  spearheaded on this occasion by Steve. Picking up the ball wide on the left, he glided gracefully past not one but two defenders, leaving them no other option than to bring him down in the box to stop his marauding run. The resulting penalty was then scored by Steve himself, followed shortly after by a second that really secured our stronghold on the game.

Real grit

Working now to place the proverbial nail in the coffin, our back three of Brian, Nashawn and Leo worked together with real grit to break down any attacks and feed the ball back to our danger men. Joshuah and Ikario remained resourceful with Michael an excellent attacking outlet. However it was Bilal who turned on the real class to net our third. At 3-1, our opposition took every opportunity to attack, drawing an incredible save from Ahmed who leapt to turn a bullet header around the post and keep the two goal advantage alive.

Taking nothing for granted, a lovely move that started with Ikario found its way to the feet of Steve who,  on a hat-trick,  burst his way past the Chobham back line, only to square it to Bilal who put the game to bed at 4-1.

On every account, this side has developed at an incredible rate and their passion is unparalleled. Well done to all of the boys for your performance and bring on next season.

Man of the Match. Steve: an individual out to prove a point. After a lapse of discipline in the semi-final, today Steve showed real maturity in his exchanges and a superior technical quality with the ball at his feet. Game-changer.

Stepping up. Bilal, Ahmed, Michael: Commanding displays from each of these three. Michael was very assured on the ball and provided an excellent link between defence and attack. Bilal is becoming more like Messi with every game, and Ahmed made two or three show stopping saves.
