Lamas 2 HBAED 3 - Year 8 Football, National Cup

FootballYesterday afternoon the Year 8 football team travelled to Leyton in East London to face Lammas School in the first round of the National Cup.

The team have had a poor start to the season and were lacking confidence coming into the tie. Anything other than a win was unthinkable.

The game started slowly with both sides struggling to get a foothold. Lammas then started to turn the screw with their number 7 making the Harris midfield three look very average. So it was no surprise that he was the one to open the scoring for Lammas with a clean drive into the bottom corner.

"That was a FIFA save"

Harris had Nour to thank that the score remained at just 1-0. A point blank reaction save got the vast Lammas crowd excited with comments such as “That was a FIFA save” and “Your keeper is a baller” flying about the touchline. Harris were very lucky to only be one nil down come half time.

The game was in need of some heroes if the boys in orange were to come away with their pride intact. The first hero to step up to the plate was Larry, our big centre half who led from the back. Commanding his back line and ensuring nothing got past him, Larry’s new-found vigour seemed to feed through to the rest of the team. Josh was now dominating the midfield alongside Tayo and Nasir, ensuring their number 7 couldn’t influence the game like he had in the first half.

Dominance

Harris’ dominance was soon rewarded with a cooly taken finish from the ever-reliable Ramari. The East Dulwich side had their tails up and more intricate play from the midfield allowed Lemar to race through one on one before rounding the keeper and slotting the ball in the bottom left corner.

At this point, the hardworking, wide-man Qasim complained of a stitch and was keen for a rest on the sideline. However, Josh decided to spray a ball out to the wing at that exact moment. Of course Qasim wasn’t letting this opportunity slide, beating his man with sheer pace before slotting the ball inside the near post. Harris led 3-1 and looked comfortable. Lammas scored a late consolation but the boys in orange saw the game out for their first win of the season.

A game of two halves and a much needed win that should build the confidence of the team and puts them in the hat for the second round of the national cup!

Mr Nowers

Man of the Match

Larry was a brick wall in defence, putting his body on the line time after time.

Fulfilled potential

Josh finally put in a performance we know he is capable of, dominating the centre of the pitch.

Stepping up

Jacob and Mahmud both performed well in their first games for the school team, winning big tackles and working tirelessly throughout.
