Exploring Watercolours in Art Class

For the past term in Art, students have been exploring the techniques of watercolour painting, developing their understanding of blending, tone and brush control.

As part of the lesson, the boys were tasked with recreating the iconic melting clocks from The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dalí.

Focusing on careful observation and attention to detail, students experimented with layering washes of colour to achieve the soft, dreamlike effect that characterises Dalí’s work. They practised creating subtle gradients in the sky and landscape, while also working patiently to capture the unusual shapes and flowing forms of the clocks.

It was fantastic to see the boys fully immersed in the creative process, building confidence with watercolours and supporting one another as they refined their techniques. The lesson not only strengthened their practical skills but also encouraged them to engage with surrealism and think about how artists use distortion and imagination to create meaning.

A thoughtful and creative session, with some impressive results emerging across the classroom.
