Society & Relationships

HBAED Students 003

Young people today navigate a highly connected, complex world where online and offline life increasingly blur. This brings exciting opportunities, but also challenges too.

To help guide your son through this exciting (and sometimes tricky) journey, we offer a rich and varied curriculum under the broad theme of society and relationships.

Students explore how to stay safe and healthy, while learning to balance their academic, personal and social lives in a positive, proactive way. They develop an understanding of online safety and respectful relationships, alongside vital topics like healthy eating, mental wellbeing, and the physical and emotional changes of adolescence.

Through discussing thought-provoking questions like “Will climate change affect children’s rights?”, “Do we celebrate differences enough?” and “Should all children receive free school meals?”, students are encouraged to think deeply, challenge assumptions and share their views.

At other times, they explore everything from British values to leadership skills, Holocaust remembrance to digital safety, anti-racism to anti-misogyny.

The aim? To nurture Active Citizens – young people equipped with the knowledge and confidence to be resilient, respectful, curious and ambitious – ready to lead healthy, fulfilling lives and make a difference in the world around them.

How do we bring this to life?

We bring all these topic to life through a dynamic mix of assemblies, guest talks, debates, discussions, and dedicated Active Citizens Days - encouraging students to dive into a wide range of topics in lively and meaningful ways. This approach ensures they see this learning not as an add-on, but as a vital part of a truly well-rounded education.

In education jargon it's called our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) eduction, SMSE (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultual) education, and relationships and sex education. Or Society and Relationships for short.

"The most exciting thing in Year 7 has been making friends. It made me feel I could fit in and loved around people. I gained people I could trust and talk to, making me feel less nervous."
