Our Curriculum

SixthForm_Edulwich_02

Whether you're passionate about academic subjects, have a clear vocational path in mind, or prefer a more hands-on learning approach, Harris East Dulwich Sixth Form has options to suit you.

We offer a broad selection of A Levels for those who thrive in traditional academic study, as well as Vocational Level 3 Courses for students who prefer coursework-based learning or a more career-focused approach.

Choosing the right path for you

You can choose to follow a single pathway or mix both types of qualifications to create a study programme that works best for you.

  • A Levels are assessed mainly through external exams and suit students who excel in academic, theory-based learning.
  • Vocational courses include a mix of coursework and exams, offering a practical, skills-based approach that may be better suited to your learning style or career ambitions.

Whichever path you choose, our goal is to build on the knowledge and skills you’ve developed in Key Stages 3 and 4, ensuring you’re fully prepared for the next step – whether that’s university, an apprenticeship or a professional career.

A rich and rewarding learning experience for all students

Our approach ensures that every student is supported, challenged, and inspired to achieve their full potential.

  • Every lesson is designed to meet the needs of all students, ensuring no one is left behind.
  • Lessons follow a well-structured curriculum that builds on knowledge and skills step by step.
  • Regular assessments track progress, provide clear feedback, and help students refine their understanding.
  • Classrooms are vibrant spaces where students are encouraged to discuss, debate, and explore ideas critically.
  • A strong emphasis on literacy and subject-specific vocabulary helps students express their ideas confidently.
  • Student work reflects deep learning, extended writing opportunities, and independent study beyond the classroom.
  • We encourage students to read widely around their subjects and explore career, university, and industry opportunities.
  • A variety of extra-curricular activities and trips enrich learning.

What we expect from you

To make the most of your time with us, we ask that you commit to:

  • 100% attendance and punctuality
  • Hard work and dedication
  • Self-discipline and motivation
  • Maturity and responsibility
  • Being an active member of our Sixth Form community

Students’ attitudes and conduct must demonstrate an understanding of appropriate workplace/professional behaviour, at all times, and they should remember that they are ambassadors for our core values and must, therefore, act as role models to the lower school students.

Our timetable allows students the space and time needed to deepen their knowledge outside of lessons too. Alongside the subject timetable, Year 12 students have an additional 160 hours a year of timetabled study periods in a dedicated study area and Year 13 have exclusive quiet study areas.

Assessment

Assessment is an integral part of learning and students will be assessed through a mixture of formal academy examinations, subject-based assessments and tasks, and regular student teacher dialogue.

In order to support the transition to the sixth form, Year 12 students will begin their Sixth Form study with a five-week induction period in the first half of the summer term, followed by an induction test for each subject studied. The expectation is that students meet the criteria set for a successful induction.

Homework and wider reading

Each subject studied will require five hours of homework per week. The work will be relevant and appropriate to the current content being studied, and there is a firm commitment that students will meet all deadlines.

Submitted work must demonstrate the standard required for Sixth Form study and students must make full use of the time allotted for study and preparation in order to participate fully and effectively in class.

Students will be taught how to research and read effectively and independently beyond the classroom, and this wider reading and study should inform discussion of the standard subject content, with teachers facilitating this application through extensive classroom questioning.
