Year 9 Meet Award‑Winning Author Nathanael Lessore in Inspiring World Book Day Event

A group of Year 9 students enjoyed an unforgettable morning in the library as they took part in a live virtual author event with the award‑winning writer Nathanael Lessore, generously sponsored by Waterstones as part of our World Book Day celebrations.

"From the very start, the session was engaging, lively, and full of funny anedotes, with our boys showing curiosity, maturity, and impeccable representation of the school," said Ms Edwards. "They asked thoughtful, impressive questions, listened intently, and interacted with genuine enthusiasm throughout the event."

“Honest, inspiring and funny”

Nathanael Lessore, author of Steady For This, King of Nothing, What Happens Online, and the upcoming Like a Brother (out this May), spoke openly about:

His teenage years: Growing up in Camberwell and Peckham, Nathanael shared funny, moving and relatable stories about school, family life, and the moments that shaped him.

His writing journey: He described the process from jotting ideas in notebooks to becoming an award‑winning author, and how his lived experiences continue to inspire every book he writes.

A typical day as an author: To the delight of Year 9, he revealed that his daily routine includes gaming and watching football as well as writing—much to the amusement of the audience.
The power of reading: Nathanael spoke passionately about the benefits of reading:
  • It boosts mental health
  • Readers tend to earn more in later life
  • It builds empathy and makes people kinder
Nathanael's message was simple and powerful:

“Writing will make your life better.”

He also spoke honestly about the biggest barriers to teenage reading today: “Confidence and phones. Your phones are interesting but get in 20 minutes of reading a day. And if you're not confident about reading, just practice— it gets easier.”

Fantastic questions from our students

WBD group

Our Year 9 cohort asked excellent questions, including:

How long does it take to write a book? Nathanael explained that his first draft takes about six weeks, but the whole journey from idea to shelf takes around a year.

How much does an author earn? With humour and honesty, Nathanael replied:
“Put it this way, when I got my first advance, I gave up my job. I earn well, but I live like I’m broke because that’s how I grew up. You’ll probably see me in the same pair of jeans at every event.”

Which writers inspire him? Nathanael named Josh Silver, Ashley Hickson-Lovence, and Malorie Blackman as inspiration.

His World Book Day £1 title. Nathanael also told students about his special £1 World Book Day book for this year, titled: Against All Odds.

Our boys spoke enthusiastically about the experience:

“The virtual event… revealed the true expanse of creative writing and reading alike… the pleasure inspired by one’s cultural identity and background.” Na’im, Year 9

“I have read King of Nothing… it was brilliant from start to finish. I can’t wait for his new book ‘Like a Brother’ in May.” Aydin, Year 9

“His books were inspired by his background and family members. This taught me that lifetime experiences can be used to share worldwide.” Sebastian, Year 9

A memorable celebration of reading

Nathanael’s energy, honesty, and humour made the morning not only educational, but genuinely uplifting.

A huge thank you to Nathanael for his warmth and generosity, and to our Year 9 students, who shone throughout the session.
