Stories Everywhere: A World Book Day Assembly to Remember

Stories Everywhere: A World Book Day Assembly to Remember

This week, our Year 7 students took part in an uplifting World Book Day assembly led by Mrs Cunningham. The session highlighted that stories exist far beyond books – in films, games, conversations, and in the everyday moments that shape who we are.

A buzzing start: stories beyond the page

Students quickly discovered how stories already influence their lives. Through polls and reflections, they explored how reading happens constantly—online, on posters, in lyrics, and in the stories we share with others. The key message: “literacy is about thinking, connecting and understanding the world, not just turning pages.”

Spotlight on the 60‑second story challenge

The energy rose as each tutor group nominated one “literary genius” to take part in the 60‑Second Story Challenge. Using prompts like “Everyone had a secret, but only I knew…”, students delivered creative, bold and imaginative one‑minute stories. Every participant showed confidence and originality, and the support from the audience was fantastic. The stories were powerful, entertaining and full of personality. A huge thank‑you to our Literacy Ambassadors and Duke of Edinburgh volunteers for judging with enthusiasm.

Stories that inspire

The assembly showcased how stories – whether fictional, scientific, personal or real-life journeys – help us escape, learn, empathise and dream bigger. They remind us that inspiration can come from anywhere.

A story that changed Mrs Cunningham’s life

“Around Year 9 I read A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer. I finished this book in just three days!  This captivated my heart because I simply did not know that it was possible for a child to live such an experience. This gave me a new perspective on life and evoked empathy and compassion, I learned that we do not all experience the world the same.” Mrs Cunningham
