Science Spotlight: Making a Red Cabbage Indicator
During Science week, our students became real-life chemists as they explored the colourful world of acids and alkalis using a very special ingredient, red cabbage!
Red cabbage contains a natural pigment called anthocyanin, which changes colour when it comes into contact with different substances.
Students carefully chopped the cabbage, added hot water, and watched as the mixture transformed into a deep purple liquid. This “indicator” was then used to test everyday household items such as lemon juice, baking soda, vinegar, and soap.

The results were a rainbow of colours: Pinks and reds showed acids, Blues and greens revealed neutral substances, Greens and yellows indicated alkalis. Not only was this experiment fun and hands-on, but it also helped students understand how scientists identify chemical properties in a safe and engaging way.

The classroom was buzzing with excitement, and a hint of cabbage aroma! We’re proud of the curiosity and teamwork shown by all our young scientists.
