Bank Of England Trip for Year 10 Business Students
The Year 10 GCSE Business group were given an exciting opportunity to visit the Bank of England, providing them with a valuable chance to extend their economic knowledge beyond the classroom.
The visit formed part of their ongoing studies into key economic topics, including the role of the Treasury, monetary policy, inflation, and interest rates. Seeing these concepts brought to life in a real-world environment helped students deepen their understanding of how economic decisions impact individuals, businesses, and the wider economy.

During the trip, students were able to explore the Bank of England Museum, where they learned about the institution’s rich history and its vital role in maintaining financial stability in the UK. The museum offered an engaging insight into how the bank has evolved over time and how it continues to play a central role in the country’s economy today.
One of the highlights of the visit was the opportunity for students to hold a genuine gold bullion bar (picture below) – currently worth an astonishing £1.3 million. This hands-on experience provided a memorable and tangible connection to the concept of national reserves and the value of gold.

Following the museum visit, the group took part in an interactive session in the Bank’s learning centre. Here, they explored the Bank of England’s role in storing gold reserves, as well as its responsibility for setting monetary policy. Students also examined how interest rates are influenced and discussed the important relationship between the Bank of England and the Treasury in managing the UK economy.

Adding an element of fun and challenge, students took on the role of “detectives” as they were tasked with identifying counterfeit banknotes (picture above). This activity helped them understand the security features of currency and the importance of maintaining trust in the financial system.
Overall, the visit was a highly enriching experience. Students enhanced their understanding of economic policy and gained a clearer insight into how theoretical concepts studied in lessons are applied in practice. It was a fantastic opportunity to extend their knowledge as part of the GCSE Business curriculum and an inspiring way to learn beyond the classroom. A special thank you to Mrs Butler for supporting the trip.
