Year 11 GCSE Geography Field Trip to Whitstable

Year 11 GCSE Geography students from Harris Boys' Academy East Dulwich recently completed their GCSE fieldwork investigation at Whitstable beach as part of their preparation for the summer examinations.

Working in a real coastal environment, students applied a range of practical geographical fieldwork techniques to investigate and evaluate the effectiveness of sea defences along the shoreline.

Using clinometers, ranging poles, measuring tapes and metre sticks, students collected primary data by conducting beach profiles, groyne measurements and bipolar analyses of coastal management features.

The field trip provided an excellent opportunity for students to develop their enquiry, data collection and analytical skills while experiencing first-hand the coastal processes and management strategies studied in the classroom.

The data gathered will be used in lessons to support further analysis and evaluation, helping students to answer GCSE fieldwork and geographical enquiry questions with confidence.

Throughout the day, students demonstrated excellent teamwork, resilience and enthusiasm, engaging positively with the challenges of fieldwork and making the most of the opportunity to bring their geographical learning to life. The fieldwork forms a key component of the GCSE Geography course and provides an invaluable real-world context for classroom learning.
