The Start of Seconday School - Welcoming Our Year 7s

The Start of Seconday School - Welcoming Our Year 7s

Our new cohort of Year 7s were straight into the stride of secondary school, where lots of new and exciting opportunities await them at our 'Outstanding' academy.

Welcomed at the gate each day by Mr Brett, the Academy Principal, the boys have been introduced to the secondary school life. We pride ourselves on being a small and inclusive school, prioritising a student-focused approach to teaching.

"I have a very good form tutor, and it is very easy to make friends." Miguel, Year 7

We aim for the boys to leave at 18 with outstanding results, giving them the opportunity to go the best universities, apprenticeships or work, whilst also having developed the skills to contribute meaningfully and confidently to society.

The school encourages the boys to become ‘Active Citizens’ and make a difference to their community. The character traits of an ‘Active Citizen’ are Ambition, Confidence, Curiosity, Respect and Resilience.

Within their first week, Year 7 already had a flavour for what is ahead of them. With new and exciting lessons, the students were quick to adapt to the changes and demands of secondary school.

We know that this can be more challenging for some students, so we provide a specialist subject called ‘Wellbeing’ to aid the transition process, and explore difficult topics, such as mental wellbeing and neurodiversity.

"Form time is nice, calm and relaxing. We do wellbeing activities to check in on how we feel and what we are doing." Abdul, Year 7

The start of Year 7 is an important time for staff to ensure that the students feel safe and comfortable in their new environment. We ensure that students know their way around the school, are supported in making friends and know who they can speak to if they have any concerns.

It was fantastic to see the boys playing a variety of sports together during their break time, having already made some new friends. Then, as lessons commence, settling down to engage and contribute meaningfully to their new classes.

"The school is very calm and a 10/10. Everyone has been very friendly." Valentine, Year 7

Sport is a key part of life at Harris Boys’ Academy East Dulwich, and the Academy has number of Sport Bursaries available.

The Bursaries are offered to every student at the start of Year 7, providing specialist opportunities in certain aspects of the curriculum. For example, the Cricket Bursary works in collaboration with Surrey County Cricket Club and 360 Cricket, providing an amazing experience for the boys. The Bursaries are also available in the Performing Arts and STEM. Please click HERE for more information about our Bursaries.

We are excited to see what our fantastic Year 7s showcase during their time at Harris Boys’ Academy East Dulwich.
