Citizenship

At our academy, Citizenship is more than a subject it’s a mission. Learning about Citizenship empowers students to understand their rights, responsibilities, and the power they hold to shape society.

By studying Citizenship, students learn how to become Active Citizens who can effect change at local, national and global levels.

The curriculum is designed to:

  • Equip students with the knowledge and confidence to engage in democratic life
  • Encourage reasoned debate and critical thinking
  • Promote the values of freedom, democracy, the rule of law, and equality
  • Inspire students to improve their communities and become leaders of positive change

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead

What it’s like to study Citizenship at Harris Dulwich Boys

Students engage with Citizenship throughout their time at the Academy. In Year 9 students have specific Citizenship lessons and explore key topics in depth. While in Year 7, 8, 10 and 11, students explore topics relating to citizenship within other areas of the curriculum. Students are encouraged to:

  • Develop their own opinions through reasoned and calculated argument
  • Understand how laws are made, how governments function, and how they can participate in civic life
  • Explore real-world issues such as human rights, justice, financial literacy and community cohesion.

While students have achieved exceptional results at GCSE in Citizenship the goal is not just academic success it's about character development

Students are challenged to become thoughtful and engaged Active Citizens who can not only participate in the local and national democratic processes but also play an active role in making their communities, local areas and nation better places in which to live.
