Spanish

Spanish at Harris Dulwich Boys takes students on a voyage of discovery, fostering open-mindedness to different cultures and ways of life.

Our specialist teachers excite students’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of different countries, people, cultures, history, literature and art. We challenge students to consider their identity and place in the world, and appreciate different ways of viewing the world.

Year 7 – an exciting journey begins

Year 7 is the start of an exciting journey that opens doors to new experiences and global connections. In Year 7, we dive into the exciting world of Spanish and discover so much more than just a new language. We learn how to greet others, talk about ourselves and use everyday expressions that bring the language to life.

As we explore Spanish-speaking cultures, we begin to see the world from a new perspective and understand how people live, speak, and celebrate in different parts of the globe.

Year 8 and beyond

From Year 8 onwards, the Spanish curriculum offers an exciting progression where language learning develops into real-world communication.

Students in Year 8 and Year 9 dive deeper into more complex grammar and vocabulary, confidently discussing a wider range of topics such as future plans, cultural experiences and school. As their skills develop, they explore more details of the Spanish language, using it not only to express themselves but also to engage with diverse Spanish-speaking cultures on a deeper level.

In Year 10 and Year 11, the focus improves, with students improving their ability to speak, write and understand Spanish with more complexity. They engage with deeper and more advanced themes, from wellbeing to social issues. With exam preparation in mind, students focus on consolidating and refining their language skills in preparation for the GCSE exams.

For those continuing with Spanish at A-Level, the journey becomes even more immersive and challenging. A-Level Spanish allows students to explore the language and culture at a deeper level, studying literature, history and current affairs in Spanish-speaking countries. At this stage, students are equipped with the language proficiency and cultural insight to engage in complex discussions and research, preparing them for university, travel or careers where Spanish is an invaluable skill.

Unlocking the power of language

The Spanish curriculum is all about sparking curiosity, building confidence, and unlocking the power of language. We introduce students to the world of Spanish, where they quickly pick up key vocabulary, grammar, and phrases that connect to their everyday lives.

Through engaging lessons and exciting topics, students develop the core skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, all while diving into the rich and diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. As they progress, students expand their language skills, learning more complex structures and confidently expressing themselves on a wider range of topics, from family and school to travel and global issues.

Along the way, they increase a deeper appreciation for the traditions, celebrations and lifestyles across Spanish-speaking countries, expanding their worldview. By the end of the course, students are not only able to communicate in Spanish – they are also curious, open-minded, and ready to take on the world with their new language skills and cultural insights.
