Netherlands - Action-Packed Sports Weekend for Years 8 and 9
Earlier in May, 29 of our students in Years 8 and 9 headed off to Netherlands for a weekend packed full of sport.
After a long day of travelling the boys set off to visit the Johan Cruyff Arena, home to Dutch giants Ajax Football Club. They were able to see famous shirts worn by players such as Haaland and Ronaldo, sit in the dressing room where the players prepare for the games and see the many trophies that Ajax has won over the years.
The highlight however was walking pitch side and seeing where many of them hoped to be playing one day. Our Year 8 captain, Amari, had this to say about the experience:
European opposition
On Sunday we travelled to Dutch side AFC 34’ where our boys put their skills to the test against their European opposition. The teams did themselves a great service, with the Year 8s coming out 9-1 winners, and the Year 9s winning 11-0.
“It was a different experience and was a pleasure to lead the team," said Year 9 captain, Jahmai. "I was very proud of the boys and their performance."
After their dominant performances, they travelled to AZ Alkmaar Stadium to watch them take on their fierce rivals Groningen in an Eredivisie tie. AZ Alkmaar must have watched the Harris boys’ game that morning, as they too came out with a 3-0 win over their opponents. Nevertheless, the away fans where loud in voice, and the boys were able to experience the amazing atmosphere the game had to offer.
“I loved the AZ Alkmaar game since it was a completely different experience, and I really enjoyed how the atmosphere was," said Emmanuel, Year 8.
After an action-packed weekend, we made the long journey home with memories to last a lifetime, and an experience that they’ll never forget.
