The first Week of Year 7 - In Students' Own Words

We dropped into the canteen at lunchtime yesterday to ask some of our new Year 7 students what they thought of their first days at secondary school. Here’s what they told us.

Sky (left) says...

Sky, Mehdi

"In Year 6 you’re the biggest in the school so here you go from being the biggest to the smallest. I felt both nervous and excited on my first day but the best thing has been meeting people and making friends."

Ayush and Miqdam say...

Miqdam, Ayush

Ayush (right): "On the first day I felt pretty nervous because you don’t know what to expect or where to go. The biggest surprise has been that I actually learnt my way to go around the building.”

Miqdam (left): "My favourite lesson has been science so far, because we got to use bunsen burners."

Sebastian says...

“The teachers are nice but firm so that no silliness happens and we do really fun things. The favourite lessons so far have been dance and science because they taught me stuff I didn’t know before. I like the uniform, it’s comfy and I feel smart.”

Deandre and Tomi say...

Deandre, Tomi

Deandre (left) "I’ve found it a nice working environment and I like how all the students are respectful. It’s well mannered and organised. Also I like the canteen. It’s my favourite part of the day because I like the food. I have school dinners. My favourite dinner so far has been on Fridays when we have chips. I found Science hard, having to do the bunsen burners and stuff like that but now I’m comfortable with it.”

Tomi (right): "It’s actually really easy to find my way around the building because I have a timetable and I know where the rooms are. The teachers have made it easier by explaining what we’re supposed to do. My favourite lesson has been PE because it was challenging but at the same time fun. When I put my uniform on I felt so proud of myself, because some people don’t get to come to this school and I feel lucky to come to school."

Roman says...

Roman

"I like this school more than primary because I feel more independent. I’d spoken to my cousin about what it would be like and he said it was amazing. There’s lots of friendly people. Wearing the uniform I feel proud of myself because this is the school I really wanted to go to."

Xinjie says...

"The biggest difference is moving around to different classes and doing a range of activities. My favourite bit so far has been making new friends. The teachers have been very friendly and they make all the students feel like they’re important. I’d been here for a taster day and I think that helped. My favourite class has been PE because I like PE. I had to sit out for a few days because I hurt my foot, but I still love PE. On my first day I felt proud of myself but at the same time I was a little bit nervous about seeing new faces. It’s been very different to what I thought it was, because some people say it’s very strict but I think it’s OK, everyone seems quite relaxed."

Lalloh says...

"In my primary school they didn’t wear uniform, so when I put on my uniform I felt much older and I felt confident in it. I feel like I fit in at school. On my first day I stuck with my friend Leon but when we got our timetables we had to separate but we waited outside for each other and stuck together until we made new friends. My favourite lesson so far has been drama, where we wrote a script. I’m looking forward to meeting new people and getting older and making new friends."

Come to our open days in September to meet more students and teachers and see our school in action.
