End Of Term Letter To Parents - From The Principal

Dear Parents and Carers

Congratulations to students for all their hard work during this academic year. The boys have channelled their efforts into many different pursuits both during lessons and within co-curricular activities.

There has been incredible academic progress, sporting success and personal development in the 2021-22 academic year and we would like to thank all the boys for their endeavours.

We were delighted to offer all students at least one educational visit or trip this year and many of them have worked hard on productions and performances. This year we are also running the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme for the very first time It has been really well received by students who have enjoyed it immensely.

The last day of term is Thursday 21st July. On this day, all students will be dismissed at approximately 12:00. On the last day there will be an Own Clothes Day where students will donate £1 to a local charity chosen through the Student Leadership Team.

Leadership changes

I am pleased to announce we have some leadership changes at Harris Boys’ Academy for September 2022. Due to the success of Harris Boys’ Academy, the Harris Federation have made me an Executive Principal within the Central Quadrant. This means that I will working across three Academies within the Federation. I am delighted to announce that Mr Christopher Brett will become Harris Boys’ Head of Academy in September 2022 and will be responsible for the day to day operations of this Academy.

Mr Bray who has been with the Academy for the last 10 years is relocating away from London this summer, we are very lucky to have had such an outstanding leader and wish him all the best in the future. I am delighted to announce that Ms Carla Price and Mr Harry Ingham will become our new Vice Principals. I am sure you would like to join me in wishing all our staff for their hard work this year and the best of luck to those staff who are leaving us for pastures new.

Summer activities

We would like to encourage our boys to remain active and engaged in learning over the summer. Please visit our website for details of summer activities your son can engage with. Completed projects will be rewarded with Harris Points in September. There is also a recommended reading list on the website with a wide variety of excellent books for all tastes. Students and staff are proud of our collective achievements at HBAED.

In advance of September, I would like to remind parents and students of our uniform policy so that you have time to prepare for the new academic year. The full uniform policy with rationale can be found on the website and is centred around inclusivity and being conducive to a formal school environment which instils a sense of pride and belonging.

Students must wear full HBAED uniform. Our blazers are fully washable by hand or machine, so you need not have an additional cost for dry cleaning over the summer holidays. The uniform includes black trousers that must be school trousers. Chino or jean style trousers are not permitted. It is also important that your son/ward has the correct shoes. These must be black leather shoes that can be polished. As autumn and winter approach can I also remind you that HBAED students wear a plain dark coloured coat. Camouflage style coats or coats with large/obvious logos are not permitted. The Harris School bag is also part of our daily compulsory uniform and should be in a good state of repair, not ripped or with a broken zip.

Please also remind your son/ward that he should not have decorated his hair or eyebrows with any designs/cut-always or non-natural dyes. If you have a query, please consult our Uniform Policy on the website.

We are aware that uniform can be costly and so have opened a Uniform Exchange on the 11th and 12th August where you will be able to come and exchange or purchase second hand uniform items. The success of this relies entirely on your own donations so please support us by donating any unwanted items you may have (in good re-usable condition and washed prior to donation please!!). Moving forward we anticipate the Uniform Exchange being available on at least one day each term but you will be notified in advance of specific dates.

I am pleased to inform you that Stevenson’s, our uniform supplier, will be on site at the Academy on Thursday 18 August between 10:00 and 13:00 with a pop-up shop. They are also opening a new Croydon Branch on the 1st August. The branch is located at 50-51 Whitgift Centre, Croydon, CR0 1UQ. Between the 1st and 20th August the branch will be taking appointments and walk in customers. From the 22nd August onwards they will only be taking walk-in customers. You can of course purchase all items from them on-line.

Free School Meals Vouchers

We are acutely aware of the recent rises in the cost of living and I am pleased that Southwark have again agreed to fund the Free School Meals Vouchers scheme for eligible families this summer. If you are eligible the vouchers will be sent to the mobile number we have on file for you during the first two weeks of the holidays.

Below is some information about other food offers and schemes that you may want to take advantage of. Further details are available at

Summer offers

At this point in the year, we wish all our students and their families a safe and happy summer. Students have learnt a huge amount regarding safeguarding this year through PSHE form time sessions, assemblies and presentations from PC Marcus.

Please be reassured that you can contact us if you have any concerns or issues about your son’s/ward’s schooling but also if you have any safeguarding concerns. If you would like any more information regarding safeguarding, please see the academy website safeguarding page where there is a lot of support and advice in many different areas including E-Safety and Contextualised Safeguarding (i.e. within your own community) or contact

We sincerely hope that parents/carers and students have a rich, wonderful and relaxing summer break and return fresh and ready to start the new academic year. The Autumn term starts on Friday 2nd September 2022 at 08:15 for Year 7 and 12 students only. All other students should return on Monday 5th September 2022 at 08:15.

Yours sincerely

Peter Groves, Principal
