Students Visit Dulwich College Libraries
Twelve student librarians and Duke of Edinburgh library volunteers had an exciting and inspiring morning at Dulwich College in June, where they explored the school’s incredible libraries and joined a special book talk.
“The morning was a perfect mix of learning, discovery and fun,” says HBAED librarian Ms Edwards. “It showed just how powerful libraries can be in bringing people and stories together.”
The visit began with a guided tour. Students discovered that Dulwich College has not just one, but three main libraries. The Junior School Library is designed for younger pupils, while the Raymond Chandler Library serves students in Years 7 and 8. Older students in Years 9 to 13 use the Wodehouse Library. The group also got a rare look at the Masters’ Library, a very beautiful library full of very old books.
One of the highlights of the trip was a powerful World War II exhibition. The students saw real-life items donated by Dulwich College families, including diaries, uniforms, medals, maps and even a food bowl carried by a prisoner of war. Each object had a story behind it, making history feel personal and real.
Later, the group joined a session with the Historical Society, where they learned about Through the Door of No Return, a moving book by American author Kwame Alexander. The discussion helped the students think about how stories from the past can shape how we understand the world today.
The visit wasn’t all serious, though. The students had the chance to meet some Dulwich College boys, play a game of chess, and enjoy Kit Kats and drinks together. As a special treat, every student received a free book to take home.
