Reading Books Added to Equipment List from September 2025
We are excited to introduce a new addition to our equipment list for the upcoming school year 2025/26: a reading book!
Why is reading so important? According to the National Literacy Trust, reading for pleasure is a powerful tool that can significantly enhance a child's academic performance and overall well-being. Unfortunately, boys aged 11 to 16 who do not engage in regular reading are at a higher risk of experiencing lower academic achievement and reduced social skills.
How can you help? This is an easy task! Students can bring an age-appropriate book from home that they enjoy, fiction or non-fiction, they can also borrow books from our school library led by the brilliant Mrs Edwards! This ensures that every student has access to a variety of reading materials that cater to their interests.
When will students be expected to read? There is an opportunity to read every day, such as break and lunch, so it is important for students to have their books daily. Independent reading will take place on Tuesday mornings during Literacy form time. Students will make a note of what they learned in their form time booklet, to foster self-awareness of progression.
The impact of reading: it’s evident in research by the National Literacy Trust that shows that boys who enjoy reading are nearly four times more likely to read above the level expected for their age compared to those who do not. This not only boosts their academic performance but also enhances their social skills and emotional well-being.
At HBAED, we believe that fostering a love for reading will help our students become more confident, empathetic, and successful individuals. Thank you for your support in making this initiative a success!
