Nick Talks About ADHD to Parents, Carers and Students
Earlier this month, we welcomed Nick, a member of the local community who has a diagnosis of ADHD, to Harris Dulwich Boys.
Several parents, carers and pupils attended and were really glad to hear Nick talking about his experiences of school, growing up, university and the working world.
He talked a lot about the ways in which ADHD can often be misunderstood. In some cases it can result in gaining huge amounts of energy which he calls ‘a super power’ as it gives you motivation to get things done and to come up with big ideas.
However, ADHD also comes with some challenges with memory and focus, which can impact on your concentration and flow, and Nick was very open about how this can sometimes lead to people with ADHD judging themselves and feeling they have not done well enough.
Nick talked about the strategies he has learnt to use to help him to stay on track, about making sure that schools and employers know what adjustments you need and on making sure that you live as healthy a life as possible.
Pupils and families asked Nick questions about all aspects of his life and he explained how he had built a really fulfilling and successful career.
We would like to thank Nick for making time to visit our academy to share his insights and advice with us.
