Poet Mason Douglas’ Workshops for Key Stage 3
Harris Boys’ Academy was pleased to welcome the poet Mason Douglas to lead workshops with Key Stage 3 groups in the library.
Starting each workshop with passionate performances of some of his most heartfelt poems, Mason then set the boys various poetry writing tasks, focusing on using different poetic forms, from the simple haiku to the more technically advanced sonnet.
Inspired by the freedom to write about what they wished, the boys rose to the task, writing beautiful poems about a wide-range of different topics from school life to race.
After spending time receiving feedback from Mason on how to develop their writing, many of the boys then performed their poems to the rest of the workshop participants.
It was clear that many of the boys were very proud of the poems that they produced with some of them saying they were inspired to continue to write poems in their own time and Jedidiah in Year 7 even sharing with Mason that he’d like to publish his own collection of poems.
Overall, it was a highly inspiring morning with lots of poetic creativity and performances, and the boys were clearly moved by Mason’s passion, performances and writing.
